Why Responsive Web Design is the Best Option For Your Mobile SEO Strategy
In the not so distant past, you’ve concerned yourself with how your website looked on your computer and worried if all your features would work with older versions of Internet Explorer. Now there is a new concern, especially for companies that had their websites created over five or so years ago, and that is making sure you have a website that is easily viewed on mobile devices. The numbers do not lie, consumers are going more and more to their handy pocket-sized computers more and more. In fact, most companies have seen a shift so large that mobile views are outnumbering desktop views, most in part to the convenience, speed and availability of newer mobile devices.
So what is responsive design? Responsive refers to the fact that based on the device used to render the site, the CSS has different sets of styles that will “respond” to that device width and adjust items on the fly. It is the designer’s job to set these CSS sets up properly for an engaging experience no matter what device you are using to view your website. Take my site for example, if you grab the right side of the browser and move it more and more to the left (making the width go down in size) you will see different things happening to the page elements. These are “responding” to the page width and applying a different set of CSS styles accordingly.
Now the Google factor. Google has stated recently that pages that are mobile friendly will rank higher than pages that do not. This is in response to what I mentioned earlier, that the trend is moving more and more to more mobile traffic than desktop. Just one more reason that you need to make sure your website is responsive and looks good on all mobile devices.
